Mobile World Congress

Actually, there’s a lot of awsome news coming from the frontline. Dominik Brandlberger supervised by Gerald Madlmayr, two colleges from the Mobile Computing department, made the third place at the SIMagine competition at the MWC and won 10.000 €. He developed an E-Mail client that directly runs on the SIM-card of a mobile phone and is plattform independent. The only issue at the moment is that the tool just runs on the simulator because the SIM is not available yet. A press release of this cool invention can be found here.

Additionally, the paper “NFC Devices: Security & Privacy” by Gerald Madlmayr has been awarded by the Symbian Foundation as one of the three most relevant publications in the year 2008. He got 1000 GBP for that.

And last but not least, Andreas Jakl has been announced as the Forum Nokia champion for the third time in series.

inline service IT-solutions

Hi there,

this week I started my work for inline service in Linz. During the last semester we developed an advanced emergency position that can be used to send data like GPS information, blood group and so on to a server. The server automatically detects the nearest emergency center. A emergency center might not only be the ambulance, also sports agencies could use this service for customers. The system provides some interfaces that can be used to include external sensors that could trigger an emergency call automatically. However, I will provide this tool soon here. It is written for Windows Mobile and you will be able to send an emergency call to a test server that will also be online soon.

Mobile World Congress 2009

This weekend, the Mobile World Congress takes place in Barcelona. Also a few guys of our department will be there and so will be some of my friends. This is why I really like to present you an outrageous project called Buddycloud, invented by Simon Tennent and Ross Savage. Buddycloud at the moment is an application for Symbian featured mobile phones and already supports the new Nokia 5800. It is an application that gives you the possibility to tell all your friends about what you’re doing and where you are at the moment, where you’ve been and where you will go. Positioning does not require GPS but uses a pattern matching system in connection with Cell Ids and other user information. Users can mark their favorite places and share them with friends. A chat system also has been implemented. So far, the available version of this application is just the beginning for location sharing. The guys from Buddycloud are working on a federal standard for location sharing called XEP-255. This standard is an extension to the xmp protocol and might be implemented by any plattform. So have a look on this projects and try Buddycloud, it’s really worth it. Buddycloud also features a link to your facebook profile and updates your status and your visited places automatically.

During the next few months our department might also get involved with this technology. Maybe the software will be ported to the iPhone to cover another part of the mobile market. Buddycloud is a pioneer in location based services without requiring GPS, so I see some nice applications for the future that may result out it. :-)
